Hot Springs National Park has a rich history. The park has prehistoric American Indian novaculite quarries. It was the destination of the Dunbar-Hunter Expedition sent by President Jefferson in 1804. The Arkansas Territorial Legislature requested in 1820 that the springs and adjoining mountains be set aside as a federal reservation. This was done in 1832 when President Jackson signed the legislation.
Bathhouses were built for those visiting the area to use.
On Bathhouse Row, the eight grand bathhouses that had been thriving since their construction in the first three decades of the century suffered from the decline. The elegant Fordyce Bathhouse was the first to close, in 1962, followed by the Maurice, the Ozark, and the Hale in the 1970s. In 1984 the Quapaw (briefly reincarnated as Health Services, Inc.) and the Superior closed. When the Lamar closed in 1985, it left only the Buckstaff still operating on Bathhouse Row. With the closing of the bathhouses the community changed. Now the citizens wanted to keep the history of the bathhouses alive so they applied for and were granted National Register of Historic Places recognition for Bathhouse Row in 1974. Currently the empty bathhouses are under consideration for adaptive renovation.
During the Civil War the community was burned. The community was reconstructed after the war ended and continues to be a place to visit today.
The water at Hot Springs National Park becomes heated at a depth of approximately one mile and then starts the long journey back to the surface through a fault.
Park Operating Hours and Season:
The park and Gulpha Gorge Campground are open year round. The visitor center is open daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except January 1, Thanksgiving Day, and December 25 when it is closed. Summer visitor center hours, May 28 – August 7, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
